Indigenous Land Crisis in
Ratanakiri
Indigenous peoples in northeastern Cambodia are currently
facing a serious crisis. Illegal land transactions and frequent conflicts
concerning their lands are threatening the livelihoods and cultural survival of
indigenous communities.
The NGO Forum on Cambodia, in cooperation with NGOs in Ratanakiri province, has
recently produced a film entitled “Crisis: Indigenous Land Crisis in
Ratanakiri”. Interested organizations or individuals may pick up a free
copy of the video CD at the NGO Forum office.
The film has provided community people in Ratanakiri an
opportunity to voice their concerns on an issue that deeply impacts on their
lives and their economic, social and cultural development. The NGO Forum is
calling upon all stakeholders to make these voices heard in the process of
formulating and implementing land related policies and legislation.
We sincerely hope that the messages in this video will lead to an increased
awareness of the situation of indigenous peoples in Cambodia and a better
understanding of their specific needs in the process of land reform. Stronger
commitment and concerted action by the Royal Government of Cambodia and its
development partners are required to effectively respond to the indigenous land
crisis and reverse the process of land alienation and impoverishment.
